What is a Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a procedure used to remove excess fat, tissue and skin from the breasts.
For many women, large or sagging breasts can be a source of unwanted attention, physical discomfort and inconvenience. At Advanced Cosmetic Surgery, our expert surgeons perform breast reduction surgeries to resolve these issues and improve our patients’ quality of life.
If you’re in the Greenville, Spartanburg and Anderson area, SCHEDULE A CONSULTATION with Dr. McFadden or Dr. Felice to discuss how we can help transform your life – both physically and mentally.
Why Choose Us for Your Breast Reduction Surgery?
Advanced Cosmetic Surgery is led by a team of highly experienced board-certified surgeons.
Our medical director, DR. THOMAS MCFADDEN, completed an Aesthetics and Breast Surgery fellowship, and was the first plastic surgeon in upstate South Carolina to do so.
Dr. McFadden has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the American Institute of Plastic Surgeons’ 10 Best Plastic Surgeons for South Carolina in 2016. DR. PETER FELICE, the newest addition to our team, has a comprehensive surgical background and is an expert in both plastic and reconstructive surgery.
Both doctors are committed to listening closely to your needs and goals, and can help you achieve improvements not only in your physical health and appearance, but also your well-being. They will guide you through every step of the process.
Reasons for undergoing breast reduction surgery
Women choose to undergo breast reduction surgery for many reasons. The most common are to:
- Alleviate chronic back, neck and shoulder pain
- Relieve chronic rash or irritation under the breasts
- Fit better into bras and clothing
- Reduce nerve pain
- Improve self-esteem and confidence
- Gain greater freedom of movement
- Correct sagging and asymmetry
This surgery also includes the option of reducing the size of the areola, the darker area around the nipple.
What to expect from your breast reduction surgery
Immediately after surgery, you’ll be relieved from the weight of your excess breast tissue, and related problems such as back pain will begin to resolve. You’ll be able to return to a desk job after about 1 week.
The improvements are so great, our breast reduction patients are often our happiest, most satisfied clients,
For 3 weeks post surgery, you’ll have soreness and limited mobility, and you’ll likely have less energy and tire more quickly than usual. Limit your physical activity to walking for 3–4 weeks, or until your surgeon tells you it’s safe to resume exercise.
After a breast reduction, you’ll have an anchor-shaped scar: a vertical scar running from the areola to the bottom of the breast, a curved horizontal scar along the bottom of each breast and a circular scar around each areola.
You may experience tightness and lack of sensation and swelling in your breasts, but these side effects will disappear as your body heals.
Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Reviews
Dr. Felice made me feel very comfortable, and answered all my questions for my breast augmentation surgery. The results were outstanding and exceeded my expectations. Not only I achieved the desired size, but they look so symmetrical! Recovery was great, no pain at all.
I have been a client at ACS for many years now (since 2016 possibly?). Over the years, I have had multiple procedures done including: earlobe repair by Dr. McFadden after my daughter pulled my earring out, botox & lip filler by a few different nurses, and a breast augmentation by Dr. Felice. First and foremost, Shaina at the front desk is incredible. She has always been welcoming, responsive, and extremely helpful. I look forward to seeing her when I come into the office. You can tell the team at ACS has a "work fam" type of culture, and they do not hesitate to extend that feeing to their clients. Dr. Felice has been beyond exceptional and I truly could not be happier with my results and care I received by him, the surgical team, and staff. I am a little over a year post op from my BA, and everything just keeps looking better and better. You can tell he really takes pride in his work/technique and loves his career. I highly recommend anyone and everyone to Advanced every chance I get :)
I’m a 45 year old mom that was looking to feel better about myself and decided a breast augmentation and lift would help. Dr. Felice and his entire team helped me achieve amazing, natural looking results. This was the best decision I made for myself. I feel beautiful and youthful.
After visiting 3 different surgeons for a breast augmentation consultation and not being pleased with the outcome, I found Dr. Felice! After meeting him and his team I immediately knew this was the place for me! I never once felt like a patient but more like family! They are all so kind and treat you with the best care! Dr. Felice went above and beyond to make sure I got the exact results I was looking for! His nurse Rachel is one of the sweetest people I have ever met, she took the best care of me post op! 12/10 recommend Advance Cosmetic Surgery, you will not be disappointed!!
I highly recommend Advanced Cosmetic Surgery and Dr. Felice. From the very beginning, he was honest and transparent with me regarding the procedure and realistic outcomes I could expect. Compared to other consultations I had, I was surprised (and grateful) at how much time Dr. Felice spent with me explaining the surgery in detail and listening to my goals and concerns. When my surgery date arrived, I was somewhat nervous, but Dr. Felice & his team quickly calmed my nerves and took great care of me. The OR nurse, Ashley, is incredible! The CRNA, Ashley, was so kind and knowledgeable. These two truly put me at ease and made my experience wonderful. Prior to going in the OR, Dr. Felice discussed my goals with me once more to ensure we were on the same page and I understood his professional recommendations. Dr. Felice called me personally the evening of surgery to check in and see how I was feeling. I was shocked at how great I felt that night and the following days. The recovery was much easier than I anticipated. After breastfeeding for almost 5 years combined between my two children, I never thought my breasts could look this great. He truly exceeded my expectations! THANK YOU Dr. Felice for utilizing your surgical expertise to help give me a newfound confidence in my body. Breast augmentation is something I’ve considered for years and I’m so glad I found Advanced Cosmetic Surgery. If you’re looking for an honest, highly skilled surgeon who takes great pride in his work and is backed by an amazing team, you must go see Dr. Felice!

Ideal candidates for breast reduction surgery
The ideal candidates for breast reduction surgery are women who are:
- Impeded by the size and weight of their breasts
- Have negative feelings about their size
- Experiencing discomfort and irritation from bra straps digging in
- In generally good health
- At a stable weight
- Nonsmokers
There is no required size to qualify for breast reduction, however, most of our patients wear a DD cup or larger.
In some cases, women as young as their mid-teens can receive the surgery. However, we generally recommend waiting until you’re at least 18 to ensure you have completed growing and that you’re emotionally ready for the procedure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is breast reduction surgery safe?
Breast reduction surgery is considered quite safe. However, it does have the same risks as any major surgery, namely bleeding, infection and anesthesia-related complications.
How many cup sizes can I go down with a breast reduction?
How greatly your breasts can be reduced depends on the size and shape of your breasts. On average, most of our patients go down 1 to 2 cup sizes. However, we encourage our patients to focus on the desired shape of their breasts, not the cup size, which is difficult to predict. We will discuss your best options.
Will I be able to breastfeed after the surgery?
Most patients can successfully breastfeed after undergoing a breast reduction. However, it’s possible that internal scarring will affect your ability to produce milk. Women who undergo particularly major reductions in size are more likely to have issues breastfeeding in future.
Will I lose nipple sensation?
For several months after your surgery, you’ll likely have numbness around the nipple. (Heightened sensitivity can also occur) Your sensitivity should eventually return to normal; however, it may remain permanently reduced. Generally, full sensitivity loss only occurs if the nipple must be fully removed and reattached during surgery, which is very rare.
How long should I wait before shopping for new bras?
After a breast reduction, your breasts require several months to heal fully and assume their final shape. For this reason, we recommend waiting 2–3 months before purchasing new bras, at which point you’ll be able to determine your new cup size with confidence.
Related procedures
If you’re considering additional plastic surgery procedures, you may wish to undergo them at the same time as your breast reduction. This strategy minimizes your total downtime and recovery period.
The surgeries most often paired with breast reduction are:
- LIPOSUCTION: This technique removes excess fat from the abdomen. Liposuction performed with a breast reduction will dramatically reshape your entire silhouette
- ABDOMINOPLASTY (TUMMY TUCK): If your breasts have increased in size and are starting to sag after pregnancy, it’s likely you’re also experiencing loose skin around the stomach. A breast reduction paired with a tummy tuck can help you regain your prepregnancy figure. Abdominoplasty can also correct diastasis recti, the separation of the ab muscles that sometimes occurs in pregnancy
