FDA-approved and trusted by millions of people for more than 3 decades, laser hair removal can help almost anyone achieve silky smooth, touchable skin.

The laser emits a precise wavelength of light that targets melanin (the pigment that gives hair its color) inside the hair follicle. This light is then converted to heat, damaging the follicle and preventing or delaying future growth.

Over several days or weeks, the damaged hair falls out and eventually grows back thinner, lighter or not at all. With multiple treatments, we can fully destroy the hair follicle or render the hair so fine and light in color as to be virtually unnoticeable.

An Upstate staple for cosmetic procedures for more than 2 decades, Advanced Cosmetic Surgery is expertly equipped to provide you with safe, effective laser hair removal. We use the Icon, a state-of-the-art platform with an advanced cooling system for your total comfort.

All our laser procedures are administered by CERTIFIED LASER TECHNICIANS who are also registered nurses, nurse practitioners or licensed estheticians. We’re led by DR. THOMAS MCFADDEN, a multi award-winning doctor who’s been named one of the 10 best plastic surgeons in South Carolina by the American Institute of Plastic Surgeons.

Advancements in laser technology means that almost anyone can be a candidate for this service. The Icon laser system can be precisely calibrated to accommodate skin and hair of any color.

Our only caveats are that patients with low contrast between their skin and hair color will likely require a higher-than-average number of treatments; and that those with very light or white hair may not be candidates for treatment as there is not enough pigment for the laser to target.

How do I prepare for treatment?

In the month leading up to your appointment, do not wax or pluck the area to be treated. These depilatory methods remove hair from the root, leaving nothing in the follicle for the laser to target.

One day before your session, shave the treatment area. This step prevents hair above the skin’s surface from being targeted by the laser and possibly damaging your skin. Don’t wait until the morning of your appointment to shave, as the increased skin sensitivity can increase the risk of inflammation.

Is laser hair removal safe?

Yes, as long as it’s administered by a qualified professional using technology that is correctly calibrated for your needs. In a safe, medical setting like Advanced Cosmetic Surgery, you run minimal risk of skin damage.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Sometimes. Some people find their hair never grows back after the initial course of treatment, while others require maintenance appointments after a few months or years. However, the hair that grows back is always lighter and sparser.

Popular among both men and women, laser hair removal can be performed almost anywhere on the body. The most common areas we treat are:

  • Arms
  • Back
  • Bikini area
  • Chest
  • Face
  • Legs
  • Neck
  • Underarms

What to Expect During Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment

First, you’ll be given protective eye goggles and will then lie down on a comfortable treatment table. If necessary, your esthetician may shave the area to be treated. Then, they’ll pass one of the Icon laser’s two handpieces over the entire area – a small handpiece for small areas and a larger one to cover larger areas of skin.

The sensation isn’t painful and has been described as being similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. As well, the Icon’s advanced cooling system will ensure your skin remains at a comfortable temperature. The session may take anywhere from 5 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the size of the treatment area.

Afterwards, you may experience redness and minor swelling that can be alleviated with an ice pack. You can also take ibuprofen or tylenol 1 hour before treatment to reduce symptoms of swelling or pain.

Results

Several days or weeks after treatment, the damaged hair roots will fall out, leaving smooth, stubble-free skin. While you won’t be completely hair-free after a single session, any hair that grows back will be sparser, finer and lighter. If you follow our recommended schedule of receiving treatment every 6–8 weeks, your results will continue to improve.

Although hair removal isn’t necessarily permanent, any hair that remains after a typical course of 2–8 sessions will be virtually unnoticeable or easy to remove with occasional maintenance treatments. Eventually, you may find that the hair stops growing back altogether.

How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Cost?

The cost of your laser hair removal depends on many factors, including the number of sessions you need and the size of the area being treated. At your consultation, we’ll discuss your budget and financing options and develop a plan that works for you.
