Mommy Makeover Recovery: What to Expect
- Initial recovery typically takes 2–4 weeks
- Total recovery time depends on the number of procedures performed
- Most activities can be resumed after 6–8 weeks, though swelling may last up to 6 months
A mommy makeover is a customized combination of surgical procedures designed to help you look and feel your best after pregnancy and childbirth. These procedures most often focus on the breasts and abdomen but may also include other areas of the body.
Because each mommy makeover is personalized, every patient’s recovery experience is slightly different. Here’s what you can expect during the healing process.
At Advanced Cosmetic Surgery, our goal is to provide exceptional care before, during, and after your procedure. For personalized guidance, we encourage you to schedule a consultation at our conveniently located office in Greenville, SC.
Common Mommy Makeover Procedures
Breast Procedures
Breast Lift (Mastopexy): Raises and reshapes the breasts without changing their size
Breast Augmentation: Uses implants or fat transfer to restore volume or increase cup size
Breast Augmentation with Lift (Augpexy): Combines lift and volume enhancement
Breast Reduction: Reduces breast size while lifting for improved comfort and proportion
Note: Breast procedures may also include areola reduction if desired.
Body Procedures
Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty): Removes excess skin and fat while tightening abdominal muscles
Liposuction: Eliminates stubborn fat deposits, often combined with a tummy tuck
Belt Lipectomy: Targets the abdomen, hips, thighs, and buttocks
Lower Body Lift: Enhances the buttocks, thighs, hips, and lower abdomen
Labiaplasty: Reduces enlarged labia following pregnancy
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Ideal candidates are healthy women who are finished having children and want to restore or enhance their pre-pregnancy appearance.
You may be a good candidate if you experience:
- Deflated or sagging breasts after breastfeeding
- Loose abdominal skin or stretch marks
- Stubborn fat that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise
Candidates should be non-smokers or willing to quit at least 4 weeks before and after surgery, as smoking can interfere with healing. If you’ve recently lost weight, it’s best to maintain a stable weight for at least 4 months before surgery.
How to Prepare for Recovery
Preparing ahead of time can significantly improve your recovery experience.
Before surgery:
- Take recommended vitamins or supplements
- Avoid blood-thinning medications (like aspirin) and certain herbal supplements
- Stop smoking at least one month prior
Prepare your home:
- Arrange childcare, pet care, and time off work
- Prepare meals in advance
- Set up a comfortable recovery area with pillows, water, snacks, and entertainment
- Keep essential items within easy reach
Recovery Timeline
Immediately After Surgery
You’ll wake up from anesthesia feeling groggy, but you’ll be encouraged to walk shortly afterward. Incisions will be bandaged, and small drainage tubes may be placed to prevent fluid buildup.
You’ll go home the same day with:
- Pain medication
- Compression garments
- Post-operative care instructions
For the first few days:
- Rest as much as possible
- Sleep with your upper body elevated
- Walk briefly every hour to promote circulation
Weeks 1–6
- Resume light daily activities after the first week
- Avoid lifting anything heavier than 5 pounds
- Attend follow-up appointments to monitor healing and remove drains
- Begin gentle movement or exercises as directed
- Avoid baths, swimming, and hot tubs during this stage.
6–8 Weeks
- Most patients can return to normal routines, including exercise, with gradual progression.
Up to 6 Months
- Residual swelling gradually subsides
- Final results become visible
- Scars begin to fade and flatten
Common Side Effects
- Bruising (1–3 weeks)
- Swelling and tightness (up to 8 weeks)
- Mild, lingering swelling
- Temporary changes in sensation
When to Contact Your Doctor
While most recoveries are smooth, contact your provider if you experience:
- Signs of infection (redness, warmth, swelling, fever)
- Reopening of incisions
- Chest pain, shortness of breath, or heart palpitations (seek immediate care)
